Joyanna went into surgery a little after 8am. I got a call about 9:30 that they had tried for about an hour to do the surgery laparoscopically, but had not been successful and they were going to switch to regular incision surgery---we later learned it was nothing major, just due to the positioning of her diaphragm, rib cage, and esophagus. Basically they needed to make a larger incision to be able accomplish the goal. We had talked about this possibility with the surgeon prior to the surgery, so we knew this was a possibility, but the surgeon was expecting and hoping to complete it without a large incision. They completed the procedures about 11:15.
However, when she was waking up she had a small seizure so they gave her a "rescue med". From experience we know that rescue meds really knock her out, so she is currently (12:45pm) still in the OR and they are waiting for her to wake up. She is completely stable so they are going to move her to recovery soon and continue to monitor her closely till she decides to finish her nap! Because they were not able to complete the procedure laparoscopically the recovery will be a little longer and it may be a couple day hospital stay. We'll try to update later in the day once she gets settled in a room.
